Parents Research Forum – Afasic and the University of Newcastle

This forum is a friendly, informal group of parents and carers with children of all ages who have a range of speech, language and communication impairments. The aim of the forum is to identify and support research into topics that parents consider to be important.

New parents and carers are always welcome to join the group. We meet a couple of times a year, with start and finish times that fit around school drop off and pick up times. Refreshments and lunch are provided, and travel expenses are reimbursed.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 17 June, in central Newcastle, when we will be looking in particular at communication and behaviour.

Bromsgrove Civic Head supports Afasic

The new Civic Head of Bromsgrove, Helen Jones (pictured right), has chosen Afasic as one of the two charities she will be supporting during her year in office. The other charity is Pilgrim Bandits, supporting wounded servicemen.

Chair of Afasic Worcestershire local Group, Bryony Walker, attended the reception following the election of the new civic head, at which there were many civic dignitaries, all bedecked with glittering chains. Bryony was asked to say a few words about Afasic and the work we do and she explained that Afasic would hope to use the funds to provide an event in Bromsgrove itself, for the local people, which was well received. There will be several events during the year and these will provide more opportunities to speak and spread the word about Afasic.

We are very grateful to Helen for choosing Afasic to benefit from her year in office, especially in what is our 45^th Anniversary Year. A brief press report can be found at the Bromsgrove Advertiser website.

Calling all parents living in or near Sunderland

We have several parents interested in meeting regularly to talk, share information, and perhaps invite speakers. They would be really pleased if you could join them. Friends and family are most welcome too.

Cambridge Mayor nominates Afasic as charity of the year

Cambridge’s newly elected mayor, Ian Nimmo-Smith, in celebrating the National Year of Speech, Language and Communication, has nominated Afasic Cambridge as one of his charities of the year.

Ian, who attended the groups recent AGM, said that he will work to publicise the National Year and promote the work of Afasic whilst in office.

The local group will have a display of Afasic’s work in Cambridge Guildhall, and will be running a number of events and activities, during the next year.

A New Support Group for York

Calling all parents and carers of children and young people with SLI in York and surrounding areas.

Afasic and the Speech and Language Therapy Service in York are delighted to announce that an initial meeting will be held on Tuesday 29th March, from 7.00 – 9.00 pm, at the Bar Convent, in the centre of York.
If you would like to find out more about the great benefits of setting up and being part of an Afasic Support Group we would be really pleased to see you there.

New local group in Norwich

A new Afasic local group has been set up in the Norwich area. The group welcomes parents with SLI children to meet other families in similar situations.

The group is arranging a series of meetings in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

The next meeting is on 22 December so if you are in the area please pop in for a coffee in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Tony Curtis, Director of Afasic England is meeting a group of parents in Scunthorpe on Thursday. The meeting will be looking to establish another local group in this area.

Parent led groups in the North West

With the help of Contact a Family and Parent Partnerships Afasic England in the North West is spearheading the drive to establish Parent Led Groups and events in the area.

“There is a great need for a forum for Parents and Carers in the North West, especially around the cities of Liverpool and Manchester”: Lesley, the contact for Afasic England in the north west said. Contact her on 07950 911 004 if you wish to join, lead or support a local group. Or if you wish to attend any of the free training in the area. The first 2 sessions, on communicating with professionals will be run in halls in Liverpool and Manchester (dates to be confirmed soon).
