Afasic young person award result
Twenty-one year old Nazar Rubai is the latest winner of the Sir Sigmund Sternberg Award.
Nazar attended The Language Unit at Whitefields School in Walthamstow, London, later attending a mainstream secondary. He moved to Northern Ireland five years ago, where he comments 'I first encountered sectarianism'.
'Sometimes I have problems getting my message across and this can be very difficult for me' comments Nazar, 'so with this award I will be able to pay for a befriender who can help me with my communication skills, independence and personal and social skills. The award will also help me to go to Strasbourg to visit the European Parliament since I cannot use public transport'.
With the award, Nazar is also planning to buy a digital video camera to make a video diary "This is what life is like" in order to help integrate young people with special needs.
We congratulate Nazar on gaining the 2006 Sir Sigmund Sternberg award.

has a Youth Project in north east London, based in Ilford,. The age-range
is 11-19 and sessions are held weekly on Fridays (7pm -9pm) in term-time
with a varied programme of activities.
There is also an off-site programme including some residential weekends,
often at Outdoor Activity Centres.

is a waiting list but if you live in the area and are interested to find
out more contact Clare Davies-Jones on 020 8317 1644 or email c.daviesjones@btinternet.com.
A number of members of the Youth Project are now at FE colleges and tell
us of good and bad things about going to college. If you are at college
and want to exchange views of what it's like where you are use the message
board in this zone. It's quick and easy to register as a member so

Young People's Days
CALLING 11-18 YEAR OLDS - COME ALONG AND HAVE SOME SERIOUS FUN!
Following the recent success of Afasic's Young People's Days we are planning
more for 2008. The days are for young people aged 11-18 who have speech
and language difficulties. They offer a chance to meet and get to know
others and chat about things which are important to young people.
We
also have games and activities to suit everyone's interests including
painting, parachute games and ball games. We even offer young people the
chance to try their hand at circus skills.
Emily Hutchcroft attended our Hampshire day and told us: "I really enjoyed
it. I'd love to do it again".
To enjoy the day it's important that young people enjoy being with others
and are happy to spend the day without their parents or carers. The day
is free for those who attend and includes lunch and snacks.
