A group of unions and educational experts have now published the new Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants which the Department for Education originally commissioned but then decided not to publish. The Standards are intended to provide advice for headteachers, teachers, teaching assistants, governing bodies and employers.
The working group responsible for drawing up the Standards asked the DfE for permission to go ahead and publish them. This was granted provided that the organisations involved made it clear that the Standards were not endorsed by ministers. Regrettably, this means that they have no statutory force, so what impact they will have remains to be seen.
