The Afasic Helpline – A Lifeline for Parents

Are you worried that your child is not talking or not saying as much as other children of their age? Do you need to speak to someone who understands and can help? Then please contact the Afasic Helpline today.

We are the only helpline that knows enough about SLCN to help you understand your child’s difficulties, what help (s)he needs and how to get it.

We also offer a ‘listening ear’ if you just want to talk to someone who understands. No query is too small or too silly. If you are worried or even just want to check there’s nothing else you need to know or do, please get in touch. Read about what we can help with.

What parents say about the Afasic Helpline

Incredibly helpful and informative. Gave lots of advice and supplied information and legal ‘stuff’ to back up my argument.
Sonia Capstick, Cumbria

There are few charities specifically for people with SLCN and Afasic have been great in giving me relevant information. There have been a few people I have spoken to now and every time each person has been very helpful, as well as understanding.
Mrs Goodwin, Berkshire

A great deal of time was given to me for which I am grateful.
Maggie Barnard, London

What can we help with?

We are the experts on getting the right help for children and young people with SLCN and all related queries. In particular, we can give information about:

  • Speech, language and communication difficulties – the various types, how to identify them and how they affect children and young people
  • How to get a diagnosis and why you might need one
  • Speech and language therapy
  • How schools can and should help
  • Choosing the right school for your child
  • The statutory assessment process, plans, statements and your legal rights to help for your child
  • Disability related Benefits
  • Any other relevant issue

We also offer a ‘listening ear’ if you just want to talk to someone who understands.

No query is too small or too silly. If you are worried or even just want to check there’s nothing else you need to know or do, please get in touch.

Tips on contacting the helpline
  • If you can, try to choose a quiet time to ring. But don’t worry too much if it’s tricky. We know babies and toddlers can be unpredictable.
  • Allow plenty of time. The average length of a helpline call is 20 – 25 minutes, but they can go on much longer.
  • If at all possible, have all the relevant paperwork in front of you – statement, reports, IEPs etc. If you don’t have any paperwork yet, don’t worry – call anyway.
  • If you contact us by email, please try to give us as much information as you can. Use the email enquiry form to help you.
