Our Campaigns
Working for Change
Afasic works with Government, professional organisations and other groups interested in DLD and/or SEND to achieve improved support and outcomes for children and young people with DLD and related conditions.
Current issues we are campaigning about include:
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Oracy
- Raising Awareness of DLD
Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
We think that the qualifying criteria for PIP need to be changed to take more account of the impact of language difficulties on young people and adults’ lives. At the moment, too many young people who qualified for DLA are being rejected for PIP when they turn 16.
In order to raise this issue with the DWP we need to hear from you. If your son or daughter has DLD and is turned down for PIP, please get in touch. We would also be interested to hear about young people with DLD whose applications are accepted as this may provide useful tips for other families
Oracy
Oracy is defined as ‘the ability to express yourself fluently and grammatically in speech’ Oracy – Voice 21. Afasic is campaigning alongside other colleagues for oracy to be included in the National Curriculum alongside literacy and numeracy. At the moment, there tends to be an assumption that children automatically learn to speak and understand. We are working for better awareness that for many children oracy needs to be taught.
Raising Awareness of DLD
This is an ongoing issue which we continue to address through RADLD and other colleagues. For further information on raising awareness of DLD see here: https://afasic.org.uk/a-vision-for-dld-for-the-uk/
